Camp Liberty, formerly a US base which is now the temporary home of some 3000 MKO members, came under mortar attack Saturday morning, leaving a number of MKO members dead and injured. |
The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) was informed this morning about mortar explosions in Camp Liberty, which led to a number of deaths and injuries among the camp’s residents. Iraqi policemen were also injured.
The Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq, Mr. Martin Kobler, immediately requested the Iraqi authorities to ensure medical care for the wounded. The Iraqi authorities confirmed that all those injured have been hospitalized.
United Nations monitors are on the ground.
SRSG Kobler has asked the Iraqi authorities to promptly conduct an investigation into the mortar explosions.
