On June 2, 1998, around 9:30 AM, while the halls and corridors of the Tehran Islamic Revolutionary Court were crowded with visitors, judicial staff, and security personnel, a massive explosion suddenly occurred in a corridor on the ground floor of the court.
The bomb had been hidden inside a black handbag and left near one of the columns in the visitors' waiting area. The bomb was identified as a homemade type with a delayed (likely timer or motion-triggered) detonation mechanism. The power of the explosion was such that it shattered surrounding windows, and the blast wave was felt up to the floor above.
As a result of this explosion, Mr. Wilhelm Atoun, an Armenian citizen and one of the court visitors, who was standing near the blast site, was severely injured and martyred before reaching the hospital. Several others sustained serious and minor injuries, including two administrative employees and one security officer.
