Martyr Mamousta Mohammad Sheikh-ul Islam

Addressing the Assembly of Experts on September 24, 2009, Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution said, “The source of this crime is definitely abroad and within the enemies' espionage agencies. But the Sunni seminarians and the Kurdish people will indubitably continue this revered martyr's path with a greater enthusiasm."

Mullah Mohammad Sheikh-ul Islam was born in Baneh in western Iran on March 22, 1936. He studied Islamic teachings with his father and other scholars. In 1957, he became a Mufti (Sunni scholar who interprets the shari'a) in the Shafi’i school. He had been teaching principles of Islamic jurisprudence (Usul al-Fiqh) for about two decades in Saqqez, a city to the west of Iran. He then went to the University of Tehran, where he was teaching Islamic jurisprudence according to the Imam Shafi’i School for some six years.

Mamousta Sheikh-ul Islam represented the people of Kordestan province in the Assembly of Experts. He was also a member at the Supreme Council of the World Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thought.

Having made efforts for the unity of Muslim Ummah, Mamousta Sheikh-ul Islam was assassinated on September 17, 2009 by unidentified gunmen in a mosque in western city of Sanandaj in Kordestan province.

Ayatollah Khamenei expressed his condolences on the occasion of his martyrdom, and said, “The loss of this learned man, who preached unity and believed in the fundamentals of the system, was injurious, but those who committed this crime must know that this terrorist and violent act will lead nowhere, and the aims of the opponents will not be realized.”
