Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Bafel Talabani, president of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), have stressed the need for closer security coordination between Iran and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq to address terrorism and maintain stability along their shared border.
According to the Young Journalists Club, Araghchi and Talabani discussed expanding economic and commercial relations, strengthening security coordination in border areas and countering terrorist threats during a telephone conversation.
Araghchi also thanked the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan for hosting and providing services to Iranian pilgrims traveling through the region for the annual Arbaeen pilgrimage.
The two sides reviewed ways to strengthen relations between Iran and the Kurdistan Region, particularly Sulaymaniyah, with an emphasis on expanding economic and trade cooperation.
They also underlined the importance of closer security cooperation to safeguard the common border, maintain stability in frontier areas and respond effectively to terrorist threats.
The two officials said such cooperation should proceed within the framework of the security agreement between Iran and Iraq.
