Envoy: Iran Deeply Concerned about Tragic Incidents in Afghanistan

Deputy Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations Zahra Ershadi said that her country is deeply worried about the recent repeated terrorist attacks in Afghanistan, and called for the punishment of perpetrators.

The ISIL's presence in Afghanistan has intensified terrorist attacks in the country, Ershadi said, addressing the High-Level Briefing on the National Strategy and Action Plan of Tajikistan on Countering Terrorism and Extremism 2021-2025 on Friday.

Ershadi said that Iran condemns the recent terrorist attacks in Afghanistan and is deeply concerned about such sorrowful incidents, calling on Afghan authorities to quickly bring the perpetrators to justice.

She highlighted the role of foreign actors through implementing irresponsible policies, including transfer of the ISIL terrorists from Iraq and Syria to Afghanistan, as a cause of intensification of security situation in the region.

The Iranian diplomat urged global and regional cooperation considering the multidimensional and extraterritorial properties of terrorism, adding that this can be realized through bilateral and multilateral agreements and international and regional organizations like Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

She underscored two agreements in 2010 and 2014 between Iran and Tajikistan on the issue.

In relevant remarks earlier this week, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh voiced Tehran's deep concern over repeated terrorist attacks in Afghanistan.

Khatibzadeh's remarks came in reaction to reports on the repeated bomb attacks in various cities of Afghanistan.

"Iran is concerned over the sharp rise in the number of such bitter incidents," the Iranian foreign ministry spokesman said.

Pointing out that the latest bomb attacks in Afghanistan took place in the holy fasting month of Ramadan when mosques are more crowded due to people’s presence, he said such terrorist attacks, whose main targets are fasting Muslim prayers, are abhorrent.

Khatibzadeh wished patience for the families of the victims of the terrorist attacks and recovery of the injured ones.

Two powerful explosions hit two mosques in Mazar-i-Sharif, the capital of Balkh province.

According to the reports, at least 40 people were killed and 100 injured in the explosion that took place in the largest Shia mosque in Mazar-i-Sharif on Thursday.

Also, at least 26 people, mostly students, were killed and tens of others wounded after two blasts targeted a boys’ school in Kabul’s Dasht-e-Barchi neighborhood earlier this week.

Two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) blew up outside the Abdul Rahim Shahid high school in Western Kabul.

A third blast occurred at an English language center several kilometers away but in the same area.
