"The United States, Israel and the Hypocrites (as the MKO are called by Iranians and many others in Iraq) are the common enemies of the Iranian and Iraqi nations," prominent Iraqi Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr said. "They have committed many crimes against the Iranian and Iraq nations," Sadr continued.
Moqtada Sadr made the remarks in a meeting with Secretary-General of Iran's Habilian Association - a human rights group formed by the families of 17,000 terror victims in Iran. A large number of terror victims in Iran have been assassinated by the MKO, which is also known as the MEK in the western communities.
The group started assassination of the citizens and officials after the revolution in a bid to take control of the newly established Islamic Republic. It killed several of Iran's new leaders in the early years after the revolution, including the then President, Mohammad Ali Rajayee, Prime Minister, Mohammad Javad Bahonar and the Judiciary Chief, Mohammad Hossein Beheshti who were killed in bomb attacks by MKO members in 1981.
The group fled to Iraq in 1986, where it was protected by Saddam Hussein and where it helped the Iraqi dictator both to suppress Shiite and Kurd uprisings in the country and to wage a war on Iran.
Sadr came to Iran last week to attend a high-profile conference on Islamic Awakening in the Iranian capital on Saturday and Sunday.
The conference, which was attended by a large group of top Iranian officials, including the Supreme Leader, president, parliament speaker and judiciary chief, was received well by the world thinkers. Over 600 foreign thinkers and intellectuals from 80 world countries and over 400 elites from Iran took part in the two-day conference.
